Waterproof Outdoor Jackets

How Do You Make Outdoor Jackets Waterproof?

Why should anybody buy an outdoor jacket that isn’t waterproof? Outdoor means to be up against wind and weather. So it is essentially that a jacket is waterproof.

As a step toward a fully high-quality product development in our own home in Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis we bought a hot air machine for seamtaping. The goal of seamtaping is to waterproof the overlap of two pieces of fabric, just like a duct tape. This is of huge importance to us: Because only a jacket with waterproof fabric and waterproof seams is suitable for outdoor activities.

Using our new hot air machine for seamtaping offers two advantages: On the hand we are able to fully waterproof outdoor jackets (up to 30.000mm). On the other hand this procedure is ecologically sustainable. We don’t need any chemicals to make the seam waterproof. Our seamtape fits without any glue.

The Snowstorm and the Jacket

Wearing Outdoor Jackets the Right Way on a Skitour

Marc is an outdoor sportsman. He searches for sports experiences all year long and doesn’t want to get sick. So he aims for wearing outdoor jackets the right way. He loves extreme conditions and that’s why he’s happy about heavy snowfalls around Easter to go skiing: in about a few minutes he looks up his destination, equips his skis with skins and starts the car.

There Marc notices that snowfalls are getting stronger and temperatures are sinking. Because of effort on the way up he chooses to wear a baselayer and a polychromelab Alta Quota 3 layer jacket on the cooling silver side. Marc won’t freeze this way, because at his skitour to the top the jacket keeps his body warmth inside the jacket despite high breathability of the inner layer membrane. The result is that on one hand Marc doesn’t have to sweat and on the other doesn’t become hypothermic.

After all his efforts he doesn’t get rewarded at the peak: the snowstorm gets heavier and heavier and he decides to wait for a clear sky. Marc easily reverses his Alta Quota jacket to warming black side and additionally puts an a fleece jacket underneath it. But weather won’t get better and his body emits a lot of warmth. So he’s happy about choosing three different layers of gear and making comfortably some pictures.

Half an hour or so later there is still no silver lining. Marc doesn’t care and goes downhill skiing in a snowstorm wearing outdoor jackets the right way this day.

Thomas Rottenberg about recommended Outdoor Jackets

Newspaper Article about recommended Outdoor Jackets

Thomas Rottenberg writes for various blogs and amongst others for the Austrian newspaper Der Standard. The passionate outdoor sports journalist presents every week some outdoor gadgets, which are essential for sports, fun and all other outdoor activities. On February 1st 2015 he gave his feedback about Alta Quota outdoor jacket by polychromelab.

“I admit: I don’t want to return this jacket.”

This is how Thomas Rottenberg introduces his article about recommended outdoor jackets. In this review he talks about, what jackets manufacturers promise and what outdoor jackets are capable of in the end. However, for a jackets manufacturer it is difficult to inform customers about the capabilities of their jackets the right way. So it is really helpful when an experienced journalist spontaneously does this job: in his feedback Thomas Rottenberg gives a statement about recommended outdoor jackets and compares our product information with his experiences with wearing the Alta Quota outdoor jacket on a skitour in Davos.

Stress Test for High-Tech Hiking Jackets

High-Tech Hiking Jackets scientifically proven

Alpine sports blog Bergsteigen.com does the stress test in comparing high-tech hiking jackets. The blog Bergsteigen.com writes interesting articles all about hiking, mountaineering, climbing and so on. Presentation of trends, testing new equipment and discussion of new routes are fields of duty for this outdoor blog.

The team of Bergsteigen.com tested Alta Quota Outdoor Jacket and Roccia Rossa Hybrid Jacket – both polychromelab’s high-tech jackets – over several months in the absolute stress test. Here you can read the full report of Bergsteigen.com! Here you’ll find out, how we proove our high-tech hiking jackets scientifically!

Bergsteigen.com does the stress test for outdoor jackets

This is an article of Bergsteigen.com. Translation by polychromelab.

The team of Bergsteigen.com tested two reversible jackets by polychromelab in a test over several months and all seasons: Both the modell Alta Quota and the modell Roccia Rossa have been tested.

Both modells excel in having little weight (modell Roccia Rossa size S 300 grams) and in beeing manufactured cleanly. Remarkably, both jackets do not look worn out after months of not really caring use in the mountains.

Additionally, all seams are welded to make the jacket waterproof. Windproofness is outstanding. For example, for one stormy and cold ski tour we only have worn a thin Merino-Baselayer, a Merino-Vest and of course a polychromelab jacket to be dressed adequately.

This jackets made of a three-layer laminate are conceptualized as reversible jackets: whether it’s cold or hot, one wears the warming, dark-coloured side (99 % absorption) or the cooling, light-coloured side on top (45% reflection). This is highly functional, because this way the wearer is dressed allright in a great range of temperature. If you search for something to criticize, you could find fault with weldseams on the reflecting side, which are distinctly visible, and with some of the pockets, which aren’t that good to reach.

Bergsteigen.com: Our Résumé

The Roccia Rossa is prettier, the Alta Quota the more functional jacket. This is why we as alpine sportsmen fancy the Alta Quota. For example, the clean tailored Roccia Rossa compared to the Alta Quota hardly has any pockets, which is a lack of storage room for tours in the mountains. A true disadvantage of both jackets stays with the price: both modells are € 700. One, who spends this amount of money for outdoor jackets, will be happy about having a great high-tech textile for many years. For persons, that make a point acting sustainable, will be interested in the fact that the production of the jackets take place only in Austria and Italy, rather than in Far East.

“That at a trek through the Alps requests good equipment is natural. Hopefully – everybody immediatedly thinks about appropriate shoes and protective gear is also well known prompt. But apparently our light 3layer fabric synthesises this contrary demands. If you are curious about it now, what happy customers can tell about an outdoor jacket for men and women, then read about the review here: report-experience-with-hiking-jacket.

Shepherd Matthias Aichner Alta Quota Summer – Part 2

2013 – Matthias Aichner is on the alpine shieling for months now.  Secludedly he spends every day outside in nature. The first part of his story you can read here: shepherd Matthias Aichner part 2.

Outside with a mountain jacket

Matthias uses the possibility to go hiking on the near mountains. As a change from tending cattles he goes mountaineering with the Alta Quota mountain jacket. During the exhausting way up the silver side on the outside of the jacket reflects uv rays of the sun to cool body temperature down. He feels noticeably cooler and is still protected from wind and weather.

On top of the mountain Matthias simply reverses the outdoor jacket to the black side. On his way down the body regenerates and temperature decreases. The black side of the jacket absorps uv rays of the sun and this way the reversible jacket warms noticeably the user.

Relaxing on an alpine shieling

Protected from wind and weather this good Matthias arrives safely on the alpine shieling. Outside in the nature of the tyrolean alps he acknowledges a qualitative product. After this hard day he enjoys the last sunshine of the day lying on the pasture.

The story of the Alta Quota shepherd summer 2014 by Thomas Quarta is available here. If you want to buy an Alta Quota mountain jacket to enjoy nature the same way as Matthias, then visit our polychromelab concept store.

Video starring Alta Rossa multifunctional jacket

An Outdoor jacket that is prepared for anything

Demands on a multifunctional jacket are high, according to whether a user expects an outdoor jacket should be versatile to be worth the price. Real allround jackets are waterproof and windproof, keep warm, but still are highly breathable. Of course jackets that are worn in nature should be resilient and reliable. If one spends a lot of time outdoor he additionally wants a comfortable jacket.

Michele Stinco as an extreme athlete has always desired such a “true” multifunctional jacket. After hard work and years of applied research in nature and laboratories the product developer has made his dream reality and created an 3 layer laminate. The fabric is windproof and waterproof, highly breathable and keeps all its promises.
