Tyrol Future Day 2016

Starting into Tyrol’s Future Day 2016

We last were on an exhibition some time ago, so we were really excited to be part of Tyrol’s strategic Future Day 2016. Innovative companies from Tyrol and groundbreaking research projects from Tyrol’s academic schools were in the centre of attention at this event. Here’s the video “Leading by Research and Development” with some impressions from Tyrol’s Future Day 2016.

Leading by Research and Development

Being a part of this ensamble of economy and research comes naturally to us. Since the founding of polychromelab we followed a two track strategy: Design, manufacturing and sale via polychromelab’s online shop and store in Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis on the one hand, empirical research and structured product development in the Alpine Proof Outdoor Lab on the other hand. Unfortunately, as it is in modern times, one has less time to make one’s statement and this is why customers often get our two track strategy. So we were very happy about the fact that there was plenty of time and interest on Tyrol’s Future Day at Congress Igls to present our mission for the future of polychromelab (and apparel).

The Beginning

Testing Jackets in Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis with Alpine Proof the Beginning

Location, check – concrete foundation, check – wooden platform, check. Three times thanks to Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis for building world’s probably most beautiful and surely highest research station for textile research and testing jackets on Schönjoch, Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis. But now we should get started.

First we build new, fancy bases for the testing dummies from the former lab on Glungezer. Second we select which outdoor jackets should be tested in the next few months. Then we pack everything in our car. About an hour later we reach the wooden platform enjoying the stunning view on the Upper Inn Valley. Beautiful. Also the weather, but we better start working, before a storm arises or something.

After the Alpine Proof banner is fixed, dummies are positioned and spinning cycles are ready, today’s work is done. But this just was the beginning. We’re collecting first weather data and measurements from the inside of the jackets already. Soon we have a greater insight in the outdoor functionality of our prototypes.

Outdoor Funktional Jackets Test – Alpine Proof

Alpine Proof initiates a Functional Jackets Test for Outdoor Extreme

One might could think of some things concerning textile research, but what specifically this work looks like isn’t always well known. Therefore we present a functional jackets test like we run it in our alpine range outdoor laboratory.

Step 1: The Perfect Spot

Weather in polychromelab Alpine Proof textile lab is always freezing, stormy and extreme in winter. Seeing that one unwillingly wants to go outside a mountain lodge, where you can enjoy a majestic view on peaks all around this spot drinking a cup of hot tea. But such days are perfect for testing functional jackets, because over night it will ge cold and windy.

Step 2: What will be tested?

Quivering we run a coldness test. Therefore we perpare two functional jackets made of similar fabrics on dummies. This way we want to detect which fabric performs better at extreme cold. This kind of test are important to improove suitability for coldness in product development processes.

Step 3: Waiting

Soon it’s dark night. Temperatures are low. Sensors we placed inside the functional jackets begin to collect temperature and draught data. But the low point of temperature isn’t reached yet.

Step 4: It’s always wise to bring a sleeping bag

It’s night now. Spotlights make it possible to examine both functional jackets at night. By now temperatures are weigh under 0°C. We’re thrilled to find out which one of these functional fabric responds better to this freezing coldness. Only by running these kind of outdoor tests we can learn what jackets are capable of worn outdoors.

Step 5: Early Bird catches the Worm

Dawn. Night is over and the functional jackets are covered with a thin layer of ice. We start immediately working and sort out measurement data on our laptops. By comparing graphs we can tell which fabric is better and on which places the functional jackets are warmer. This conclusions are worth a mint for product development. This is the only way to improove weak spots of jackets.

Schoeffel OESV Warmup DH Suit Women

Polychromelab launches new Schoeffel OESV Warmup DH Suit Women

Polychromelab launches new Schoeffel OESV Warmup DH Suit for Alpine Ski Worldcup Women in Bad Kleinkirchheim. This ski overall by Schoeffel and OESV made off a 3 layer fabric is explained to Austrian ski racers here. Read about what this ski overall made off the unique reversible fabric by polychromelab is capable of and why Schoeffel and OESV have chosen this fabric for their equipment.

Collaboration between Schoeffel, OESV and polychromelab at Wintersports Gear

Polychromelab ltd., Tyrolean startup with site in Innsbruck and high altitude lab on 2610 meters, was able to persuade visionary Toni Giger (head of department for development, research and innovation at OESV) and Schoeffel Sportsgear ltd. Schwabmuenchen (official outfitter of OESV Alpine Racing Ski since 2009) in 2014 for the project “Warmup Downhill Suit” in alpine racing ski. Shared passion for research and sports science had helped this highend project come to life.

OESV’s downhill racing skiers wear worldwide unique Warmup Downhill Suit made off reactive polychromelab 3 layer fabric. Women’s ski team Austria wears Warmup DH Suit at training and at preparation until race’s start.

If racing skiers feel cold, they wear Schoeffel OESV Ski-Overall on black outside and take advantage of infrared and uv radiation to need less clothing to stay warm and to sweat less at warming up. It gets interesting in spring and summer training (Zermatt and domestic glaciers). This concept offers athletes the unique opportunity to stay cool when it’s hot. More features of this ski overall are high elasticity in back and bottom area. The concept of “freedom of movement” is setting some touchstones in overall clothing sector.

ZDF documentary about jackets and textiles

ZDF shooting team visits alpine laboratory for jackets and textiles

The ZDF shooting team visits the alpine laboratory for jackets and textiles on Mount Glungezer in Tyrol in December 2013. There the tyrolean manufacturer of jackets and textiles, polychromelab, runs the highest research station for applied textile research.

Here some impressions of the ZDF documentary about the Alps of January 2014.

FrozenLAB 2 – cold spell in the alpine laboratory

Our textile laboratory Glungezer is frozen

Hoping our Lab won’t get a cold at these conditions.

We’re testing the Alta Quota and the Roccia Rossa polychrome fabric under all conditions. The Glungezer Hütte in Tyrol offers the best exposition for such quality researches. We’re very happy that we can do this in Tyrol, because it is often windy, summertimes hot and in the winter extremely cold. What else has an outdoor jacket to stand?
