Exploring Innovation

Innovation in the Alps

Winter is icecold. Competion isn’t in hibernation. Fortunately our strength is the freezing cold. Exploring innovation polychromelab moved to Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis. Here we prepare our jackets for the iciness in two ways.

In the Alpine Proof Outdoor Lab on 2000 meters we’re sometimes feeling like the next ice age is coming up. We have state-of-the-art testing dummies for proofing our products against the freezing cold. This is innovation in the Alps. Read more on this in the post “Icy Innovation“.

Up against wind and weather, heat and cold, high UV radiation and frost isn’t enough for our approval. Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis offers a wide playground. On ski tours we’re testing our winterjackets for stretchability, at free ride skiing for insulation, at climbing for sturdiness and in town for lifestyle suitability. The team of Blog Tyrol shows what you can experience up here in 24 hours.

Innovation is our advantage. Against competition from large companies we proof polychromelab’s jackets for outdoor suitability like you really need it in the Alps.

Waterproof Outdoor Jackets

How Do You Make Outdoor Jackets Waterproof?

Why should anybody buy an outdoor jacket that isn’t waterproof? Outdoor means to be up against wind and weather. So it is essentially that a jacket is waterproof.

As a step toward a fully high-quality product development in our own home in Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis we bought a hot air machine for seamtaping. The goal of seamtaping is to waterproof the overlap of two pieces of fabric, just like a duct tape. This is of huge importance to us: Because only a jacket with waterproof fabric and waterproof seams is suitable for outdoor activities.

Using our new hot air machine for seamtaping offers two advantages: On the hand we are able to fully waterproof outdoor jackets (up to 30.000mm). On the other hand this procedure is ecologically sustainable. We don’t need any chemicals to make the seam waterproof. Our seamtape fits without any glue.

Sewing without Needle and Thread

Winterjackets – Sewed without Needle and Thread

How do you sew a winterjacket without needle and thread? Polychromelab pursues innovative, visionary product design. Today we present to you our new ultrasonic welding machine.

Apparel manufacturers demand waterproof jackets. To do so they have to consider several things. One of them is the seam of a jacket. But how do you sew two pieces of textile together without making them permeable to water? We do this by using an ultrasonic welding procedure not using any needles and threads at all. This is something what makes a seam more waterproof. Here you’ll learn how the ultrasonic welding procedure works in detail.

We try to establish in our store TexStilKüche in Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis an innovation driven product development. This way we can monitor the research process more carefully. At the moment we are manufacturing in northern Italy. Distances are short and communication is easy, but in Tyrol with product development right at home we will be able to test new ideas faster and design custom-build products.

Opening Alpine Proof – Future of Outdoor Apparel

The Future of Outdoor Apparel at Alpine Proof Outdoor Lab

Yesterday was the day. Early in the morning we were quite nervous and after weeks of planing we couldn’t wait for the event: We celebrated the opening of polychromelab’s Alpine Proof outdoor lab in Serfaus.Fiss.Ladis – festively in the presence of supporters, partners and enthusiasts.

Our guests were Harald Gohm from Location Agency Tyrol, Benny Pregenzer managing director from Fiss-Ladis Mountain Railways, Franz Tschiederer managing director from tourism association Serfaus.Fiss.Ladis, Markus Pale major of Fiss and Thomas Bechthold professor at Textile Physics Dornbirn. Their statements explained what Alpine Proof is and what the collaboration between economy and sciences means to the region of Serfaus.Fiss.Ladis and the future of outdoor apparel. Michele Stinco rounded out the opening with some practice examples.

More on this you’ll find in Pro.media agency’s press release here: Opening Alpine Proof Outdoor Lab

Smitten with Amazement on 2436 Meters

At the valley station of Schönjochbahn in Fiss we met at 10:00. We get to 2436 meters in the cars of Schönjochbahn. Up here we enjoyed a bright blue sky and an amazing view. Walking just a few meters next to the skiing slope we reached the Alpine Proof research platform jutting out over the ridge. At the edge we felt freezing wind, some meters in the back it was better.

Stunned the group listened to the speeches and even attracted some interested tourists. After the presentation Michele Stinco explained some stations of our research platform. We concluded the morning in Bergdiamant restaurant on Schönjoch.

For us it was a great chance to present project Alpine Proof to a broader audience: this unique site in Serfaus.Fiss.Ladis is something you can’t buy with money. We will see how we can write the history of outdoor apparel here on 2436 meters.

Fred Einkemmer photographes the opening:

Serfaus.Fiss.Ladis supports Outdoor Lab

Serfaus.Fiss.Ladis with World’s Highest Outdoor Lab for Apparel

As Serfaus.Fiss.Ladis we are pleased to sustain the scientific work of polychromelab and sport science. Serfaus.Fiss.Ladis breaths quality. Alpine Proof represents a seal of quality for outdoor products. This is a standard developable only in mountain regions. Right there, where weather happens.

The Alpine Proof Outdoor Lab Serfaus.Fiss.Ladis is the world’s highest outdoor lab for apparel. At Schönjoch 2436 outdoor products are tested scientifically. This research project between economy and science is really innovative, because – believe it or not – never was outdoor apparel tested this realistically and expressively. To enjoy broad qualitative outdoor sports activities one has to have outdoor apparel for every weather condition tested qualitatively and functioning optimally.

What is Alpine Sport Science?

Alpine Sport Science at Alpine Proof Outdoor Lab

The study of apine sport science incorporates the interaction of man, apparel and weather in mountain regions. Here at Schönjoch 2436 the Centre for Ski and Alpine Technology Innsbruck, Textile Physics Dornbirn and polychromelab ltd. are working on scientific methods to understand and analyse weak points of outdoor apparel, improving future standards.

At the moment we fix outdoor jackets on test dummies to simulate an aging process initiated through alpine weather. These spinning cycles are for testing how textiles are handling high work load.

This is alpine sport science: After several months these outdoor jackets have experienced a lot. But they haven’t suffered in vain, because they’ll pass through their knowledge to the next generation. This is what polychromelab is doing for the last three years with their own outdoor jackets. You’ll find the result in our online shop here: outdoor jackets online shop.

The Beginning

Testing Jackets in Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis with Alpine Proof the Beginning

Location, check – concrete foundation, check – wooden platform, check. Three times thanks to Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis for building world’s probably most beautiful and surely highest research station for textile research and testing jackets on Schönjoch, Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis. But now we should get started.

First we build new, fancy bases for the testing dummies from the former lab on Glungezer. Second we select which outdoor jackets should be tested in the next few months. Then we pack everything in our car. About an hour later we reach the wooden platform enjoying the stunning view on the Upper Inn Valley. Beautiful. Also the weather, but we better start working, before a storm arises or something.

After the Alpine Proof banner is fixed, dummies are positioned and spinning cycles are ready, today’s work is done. But this just was the beginning. We’re collecting first weather data and measurements from the inside of the jackets already. Soon we have a greater insight in the outdoor functionality of our prototypes.

Testing Jackets Scientifically – Alpine Proof

Meeting with Sports Scientists: Testing Jackets Scientifically

Unfortunately weather wasn’t that good, after heavy rain the ground was wet. The clouds only hestiantly reveal the view of Serfaus – Fiss – Ladis’ unique panorama. Yet the sports scientists came to the building site of Alpine Proof’s new textile lab. Because the things we’re creating here are more important than dry shoes. From Textile Physics Dornbirn Dr. Tom Wright and Dr. Barnaby Caven, from Sports Sciences Innsbruck Dr. Robert Csapo and Sebastian Wenger and from polychromelab Michele Stinco and Elisabeth Frey are completing the Alpine Proof Team to make testing jackets scientifically under studio and real conditions accessible for companies and manufacturers.

When the cloud cover brightened and revealed the view on the Upper Inntal, plans of the textiles research project Alpine Proof in Serfaus – Fiss – Ladis became clearer too. The ground, on which we’re standing, is safer than before, because we discussed some great ideas to test in near future jackets scientifically, right in the heart of the Alps. The centrality but even though exposition of the new textile lab makes insights in testing jackets scientifically accessible for a broader audience, without passing on extreme weather conditions. Soon customers can see by theirselves what a outdoor jacket is capable of before buying it in the store. Only an ideal? No, soon we’ll see!
