Roccia Rossa Hybrid Jackets and their Rocky Trail

Moving to Serfaus – Fiss – Ladis: Innovative Hybrid Jackets are Breaking Trail

2009 concept, 2010 first prototype, 2011 first awards, 2012 foundation, 2013 first store and webshop, 2014 textiles research Alpine Proof, 2015 first relocation. This is a brief history of polychromelab so far. In part one of our way to Serfaus – Fiss – Ladis we presented our Store Ski Manufacture, in part two we talked about Alpine Proof. In part three we’d like to concentrate on the rocky trail Roccia Rossa hybrid jackets had to break.

Part 3: From Prototype to Flagship

This shouldn’t sound arrogant, we’d only like to point out difficulties innovative startup companies have to hurdle to establish their products on the market – which we luckily managed.

hybridjacken onlineshop trailrun polychromelab

It all started with the concept of a black silver hybrid jacket, that warms one the black side and cools on the silver one. Without financial support we wouldn’t have managed to build the first prototype which is necessary to win awards to convince the critical mass. We took this step with black silver Alta Quota hybrid jackets to win Outdoor Industry Award 2012.

But a concept that may be ever so groundbreaking will not establish on the market without being developed further: so a black silver jacket solely would be a little bit boring for good. So we asked ourselves, is their a chance to transfer this principle of reflection and absorption to different colours? Maybe not to every colour, but within a consistent research process and supported by first incomes we were able to design Roccia Rossa hybrid jackets.

Roccia Rossa hasn’t won ISPO Award 2014 in vain: Nowadays a combination of design and functionality, authenticity and innovation is essential. Roccia Rossa hybrid jackets is adapted to red rocks (thus the Italian name “Roccia”) in Tyrolean alps. Functionality is ideal for outdoor sports. Its design makes this hybrid jackets suitable for every day. As a consequence ISPO Award 2014.

Now we’re on our way to Serfaus – Fiss – Ladis, where we’ll focus our competences to take the next step. Because in a few years what we achieved until now won’t be enough. This is the rocky trail of innovation.

Lifestyle Startup on Forbes Austria

Magazine Forbes Austria about Lifestyle Startup polychromelab

The economics magazine Forbes Austria writes about lifestyle startup polychromelab. In April’s edition of this well-known magazine the situation of austrian startups is a key subject. Austrian apparel retailer polychromelab with its innovative 3-layer-laminate reversible jacket is under top 20 of Austria’s startups.

Forbes Austria gives an overview about the situation of young startups on Austria’s market. The key problem for startups in Austria is the fact that 90% of newly founded companies go out of business in the first two years. The problematic shortcomings are: Budget, Stradegy and Marketing. Despite great innovations which could revolutionize the market, startups have to sell their ideas or crash. The result is an enormous potential lying waste.

More information on these difficulties you’ll find in April’s edition of Forbes Austria. Get the whole polychromelab story in our blog and onlineshop. Obviously we’re happy about surviving the first two years as a lifestyle startup, but we share AWS impulse’s oppinion of stronger financial support for Austrian startups.

Schoeffel OESV Warmup DH Suit Women

Polychromelab launches new Schoeffel OESV Warmup DH Suit Women

Polychromelab launches new Schoeffel OESV Warmup DH Suit for Alpine Ski Worldcup Women in Bad Kleinkirchheim. This ski overall by Schoeffel and OESV made off a 3 layer fabric is explained to Austrian ski racers here. Read about what this ski overall made off the unique reversible fabric by polychromelab is capable of and why Schoeffel and OESV have chosen this fabric for their equipment.

Collaboration between Schoeffel, OESV and polychromelab at Wintersports Gear

Polychromelab ltd., Tyrolean startup with site in Innsbruck and high altitude lab on 2610 meters, was able to persuade visionary Toni Giger (head of department for development, research and innovation at OESV) and Schoeffel Sportsgear ltd. Schwabmuenchen (official outfitter of OESV Alpine Racing Ski since 2009) in 2014 for the project “Warmup Downhill Suit” in alpine racing ski. Shared passion for research and sports science had helped this highend project come to life.

OESV’s downhill racing skiers wear worldwide unique Warmup Downhill Suit made off reactive polychromelab 3 layer fabric. Women’s ski team Austria wears Warmup DH Suit at training and at preparation until race’s start.

If racing skiers feel cold, they wear Schoeffel OESV Ski-Overall on black outside and take advantage of infrared and uv radiation to need less clothing to stay warm and to sweat less at warming up. It gets interesting in spring and summer training (Zermatt and domestic glaciers). This concept offers athletes the unique opportunity to stay cool when it’s hot. More features of this ski overall are high elasticity in back and bottom area. The concept of “freedom of movement” is setting some touchstones in overall clothing sector.

Difficulties for Austrian Start-ups

Start-ups strenghen Economy through Innovation

What it means to be a start-up, we truely know. The first three years are the most difficult for start-up companies – most start-ups fail in this time. Many things we succeeded only were possible with help of the Austrian supporting bank AWS. This year Michele Stinco in fact was chosen as a jury member of AWS for his long time experience with polychromelab.

This Austrian newspaper article about innovative start-ups and their difficulties in Austria’s economy made us think about our experiences as a start-up company: Fehlende Risikokultur behindert Wachstum in Österreich-DerStandard

Start-up polychromelab – hightech winter jackets

Firstly, there was an idea: a fabric that cools on one side and, reversed to the other side, warms to need less clothing at winter sports. Secondly, a prototype was engineered: a winter jacket that is windproof, waterproof and breathable. Thirdly, there was the innovation: a hightech reversible jacket that is capable of nearly everything.

The problem is to make this highend jacket ready for series production without generating too much costs. AWS supporting programms helped us to found polychromelab inc. and to win many awards with our innovative products. Many innovative start-ups don’t have the chance to do the same.

If you’d like to read more about venture and start-ups, here is an interesting article about polychromelab on a really thrilling website.

News about Innovation Startup in textiles sector

Small companies sustain innovation

The austrian newspaper Wirtschaftsblatt Österreich writes about the story of founding of the Tyrolean startup polychromelab. To go into business yourself and found a company means a huge risk to everybody, who decides to do so. Especially the first five years are the hardest. One has to learn a lot about it and to be flexible. And above all in Austria one has to bring along innovation. Innovation makes products unique and only innovative, unique products stand a chance to come out on top.

“In the USA they know that small companies sustain innovation.” – Christoph Holz, visualyze GmbH

Polychromelab is a small company and for that we are very proud about this article in the WirtschaftsBlatt. Here you find the article about the innovation startup polychromelabGründer-würden-es-wieder-tun.

More about the topic innovation in the textile sector you’ll get here: Alpbach-Forum-Alpine-Proof. The idea behind Alpine Proof is to realise an alpine seal of approval for outdoor gear, that labels qualitive products, which are tested in the Tyrolean Alps.

Alpine Proof on Alpbachforum

Alpine Proof – the alpine seal of approval

On the european Forum Alpbach the Standortagentur Tirol arranged on thursday 22.08.2014 the 13th technology-brunch. Representatives of Tyrol and Vorarlberg and diverse companies were there to talk about innovative research on textiles.

The most considerable project amongst others is the collaboration between polychromelab 2610 and the institutes for textile physics (Prof. Dr. Thomas Bechthold) and for ski and alpine (Prof. Mag. Dr. Werner Nachbauer) of the university of Innsbruck. Made possible by the support of the OEAV section Hall and the Glungezer Hütte there is now a chance for apparel companies to scientifically test their products and textiles under real conditions in the tyrolean nature.

Through the conception of polychromelab – because we put emphasis on apparel that keeps its promises – the project Alpine Proof came to live. Broad collaboration and financial support will take applied science for textiles to the next level. In winter 2013/2014 the first testing session already took place: tents by the german company Heimplanet were testet in the polychromelab 2610.

Here is the official news release by Standortagentur Tirol:

Start-up Poetry Slam with Markus Koschuh and polychromelab

Yesterday the probably first and unique Start-up Poetry Slam took place in the Villa Blanka, Innsbruck, hosted by AWS and CAST Tyrol, during the tyrolean Start-up Day. The Start-up Day informs young businessmen how to place innovative ideas on the market.

For this purpose the Start-up Day invited companies, which momentarily are in the process of founding. This way polychromelab was invited to the Start-up Poetry Slam. Stefan Abermann, Yasmin Hafedh, Markus Koschuh, Hans-Peter Ganner and Klaus Lederwasch showed their performance about the young companies. Markus Koschuh has chosen polychromelab and honoured us with an inspiring text, which impressed with its humor, intellect and magniloquence. The audience was delighted about the visualization of polychromelabs everyday work and Markus Koschuh won the preliminary round! In the final he just underlied Hans-Peter Ganner.

It was a thrilling evening full of humor, innovation and interesting information about austrian start-ups. For all, who missed the Start-up Poetry Slam, we will upload a video of the slam in about a week on our Vimeo Channel.
