Waiting for snow – skiing in Tyrol

Wearing winter jackets at skiing in Tyrol: Waiting for snow

To improve our winter jackets continously, of course, we have to test our own productions repeatedly. For a keen athlete this means: go skiing or snowboarding in that moment snow starts falling, going on a ski tour, jogging and running, a nice trailrun here and there and especially, if one likes to proof suitability for coldness of winter jackets, spending a lot of time outdoors in winter.

The problem this year is: on the one hand, temperatures are allright (meaning at the bottom of thermometer), but on the other hand, snow isn’t falling in Tyrol this year too early. For a keen athlete this means: spot weather, packing winter gear, skis, snowboards and skins for ski tours and make a camp nearby the slopes.

Fortunately, as keen athletes, we prepared ourselves for this lack of snow, so we make ourselves comfortable on camping chairs reading a good book, warmed by polychromelab’s winter jackets, and watch the snow melting.

New mountain jacket with new colours

Testing new colour combination of the mountain jacket

A mountain jacket not only has to offer functionality, but also has to look good. As a valuable textiles-manufacturer of course both aspects lie us to heart.

First of all, we develope jackets, that can stand even the most extreme conditions in the mountains. To test this out we expose the proto-types a few months to the unpredictable alpine weather at the Glungezer-Lab. Because a mountain jacket has to be windproof, waterproof and sturdy. Through natural erosion of wind and rain we can survey how well the material does under real conditions.

But also fashion aspects do matter to us. Because of that we develope new colour combinations, which work properly and additionaly look pretty good. First there was black-silver, then blue-bronze and now a grey-green mountain jacket. All jackets are conceptualized as reversible jackets and, if you believe it or not, the dark-coloured side warms and the bright-coloured side cools. This way the hybrid jacket not only protects from wind and weather, but also supports the wearer to regulate and stabilise body temperature.

Soon the day has come: one of the final tests is the applied test of the proto-type. Here are some pictures of a mountain run through the Alps wearing the new grey-green mountain jacket from polychromelab.

Outdoor summer 2014 with polychromelab – part 2

A reversible jacket to rule them all

Did you miss the first part of our outdoor summer review 2014? No problem, you can read the full article here: Outdoor Summer Part 1. Today we continue with the story of polychromelab in a nature, in which a reversible jacket is needed, to be prepared for everything.

Good to hear that the OEAV recommends polychromelab jackets. On the picture you can see Gerald Aichner on a cycling tour through Greece.

For our alpine research lab polychromelab 2610 at the Glungezer in Tyrol we have bought a mountainbike to test performance in high altitude.

You won’t believe it, but this picture is taken in June. Michele Stinco is trailrunning on snow. Luckily a polychromelab reversible jacket has a cooling and a warming side. Simply reverse!

Conclusively we want to thank everybody who had helped to win the Eurobike Award 2014 for our reversible cycling jacket in collaboration with Pedaled.

Eine Wendejacke passt sich an

Hast du den ersten Teil unseres Outdoor Sommer Rückblicks 2014 verpasst? Kein Problem, hier kannst du alles nachlesen: Outdoor Sommer Teil 1.

Sebastian Cuina in Patagonia

Hi guys!

How are you? I am writting because I have some news:
I will be running in Patagonia next week. The name of the Race is „4 Refugios“ (Four mountains shelters), and it covers 4 mountain shelters in two days running. It is a trail running race. The place will be Bariloche, it is a well known ski centre in Patagonia (it is the biggest). It is ending summer here, but at 2.500 mts in height the wind and the cold show up.

I will write you as soon as I finish, and I hope to have some nice pictures to send you too. I wish everything to be great there,

Regards, Sebastian

Sebastian Cuina

This is Sebastian Cuina, he is an orienteer in Argentina:

It was a hard race, 80 kilometers in two stages of 40. Each stage had 2.000 meters of altitude difference. We (a friend and I) made them in 17 hours. We are not going to be recognized, even in a 100 years from now for our challenge, but we are happy about our performance. We only had 2 and a half months of training. But it just was the beginning…

I still don’t have a lot of pictures, I am sending you just a few. I hope to find some in the next days. Even though, I am attaching two. What you see behind me is the Nahuel Huapi Lake, and the Tronador Mountain. Tronador has snow every year, and there is a glaciar on the top. I am running there to the Cerro Lopez Summit.

I want to apologize because I do not use the jacket, but temperature was 35°C, so I was running with a short slave T-shirt.

As soon as I get more pics, I will send them to you. Next step, I think it will be in May, at Cordoba Province, hiking Cerro Champaqui. There it is going to be COOOOLDDDD.

See you, Sebastian
