We last were on an exhibition some time ago, so we were really excited to be part of Tyrol’s strategic Future Day 2016. Innovative companies from Tyrol and groundbreaking research projects from Tyrol’s academic schools were in the centre of attention at this event. Being a part of this ensamble of economy and research comes naturally to us. Since the founding of polychromelab we followed a two track strategy: Design, manufacturing and sale via polychromelab’s online shop and store in Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis on the one hand, empirical research and structured product development in the Alpine Proof Outdoor Lab on the other hand. Unfortunately, as it is in modern times, one has less time to make one’s statement and this is why customers often get our two track strategy. So we were very happy about the fact that there was plenty of time and interest on Tyrol’s Future Day at Congress Igls to present our mission for the future of polychromelab (and apparel).

Die letzte Messe liegt schon eine Weile zurück, darum haben wir uns besonders auf den Tiroler Zukunftstag 2016 gefreut. Innovative Tiroler Unternehmen und durchschlagende Forschungsarbeiten Tiroler Hochschulen standen im Fokus der Veranstaltung. Polychromelab passt in diese Ensamble aus Wirtschaft und Forschung natürlich perfekt rein. Seit Gründung des Unternehmens wird eine Zwei-Schienen-Strategie gefahren: Design, Produktion und Verkauf von polychromelab Produkten über den Onlineshop und Store in Serfaus auf der einen Seite, empirische Forschung und gezielte Weiterentwicklung des Stoffes im Alpine Proof Outdoorlabor auf der anderen Seite. Doch wie das so ist in einer Welt, in der man nur wenige Sekunden Zeit hat, sein Statement zu äußern, kommt das Konzept dieser Zwei-Schienen-Strategie beim Endverbraucher häufig nicht an. Darum haben wir uns sehr gefreut, dass auf dem Tiroler Zukunftstag im Kongresszentrum Igls genügend Zeit und vor allem großes Interesse vorhanden war, um unsere Mission zu präsentieren.

The market never sleeps. It also never is full. One has to adapt to stay competitive. Every day there’re new innovations. Every innovation creates new target markets itself and hence influences the customer’s demands. For example, windproof winterjackets.
Luckily refining products is something we really like. We forgo some hours of sleep and watch the winterjackets at the windtest in the Alpine Proof outdoor lab, fortunately at home in front of our laptops via webcams. Here the video of the windtest
You can take windspeed from the graphic below to see what conditions the winterjackets have to stand up to. Normally one never has to feel windspeeds of 95 km/h and higher at regular outdoor activities, but it’s nice to know that in case the jacket can stand the wind, while the wear hardly can stay on his feet.

Der Markt schläft nie. Er ist auch nie satt. Da muss man sich schon anpassen, wenn man mithalten will. Innovationen gibt es Tag um Tag neue. Jede Innovation schafft damit auch neue Zielmärkte und beeinflusst die Anforderungen der Kunden. Zum Beispiel winddichte Winterjacken.
Gut, dass uns Tüfteln Spaß macht. Wir haben selbst einige Stunden nicht geschlafen und den Winterjacken beim Windtest im Alpine Proof Outdoorlabor, glücklicherweise gemütlich per Webcam vorm Laptop, zugeschaut. Hier das Video vom Windtest.
In der Grafik unten kann man die Windgeschwindigkeit sehen, der die Winterjacken ausgesetzt sind. So einem Wind von 95km/h begegnet man bei den gewöhnlichen Outdooraktivität hoffentlich nie. Aber es ist beruhigend zu wissen, dass wenigstens die Jacke hält, auch wenn man selbst fast vom Wind davongeblasen wird.
polychromelab concept storeAnfang Oktober war polychromelab zur Standort Lounge in Wien zusammen mit einem Projekt für Schneetechnologie eingeladen, um das Forschungsprojekt Alpine Proof als Vorzeigeprojekt für Innovation und regionale Kompetenzstärkung vorzustellen. Es war wirklich ein tolles Erlebnis wieder einmal in Wien zu sein und Interessierten die eigene Arbeit näherzubringen.
Zu diesem Anlass erstellte die Standortagentur Tirol einen Film über Alpine Proof. Einige Wochen zuvor besuchten sie uns also im Outdoorlabor auf dem Schönjoch auf 2436 Metern in Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis. Early in october polychromelab was invited to Standort Lounge in Vienna together with a project for snow technologies to present its research project Alpine Proof as an example for innovation and regional support for competences. It was a great experience to visit Vienna once again explaining the own work to an interested audience.
For this event the Standortagentur Tirol made a short movie about Alpine Proof. Some weeks ago they visited us in the outdoor lab on Schönjoch on 2436 meters in Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis. We’d like to give a compliment to the hosts for this modern and innovative ambiente matching the presented projects from Tyrol. All information on Standort Lounge Vienna you’ll find on the website of Standortagentur Tirol here.
Lage, check – Betonsockel, check – Holzplatteau, check. Dreimal danke an Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis, denn die wohl schönste und auch höchste Forschungstation für Textilforschung und Jackentests steht nun auf dem Schönjoch in Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis. Jetzt sollten wir dann aber auch langsam mal loslegen.
Zuerst geben wir den Testpuppen vom ehemaligen Labor auf dem Glungezer einen schicken, neuen Sockel. Dann suchen wir aus, welche Outdoorjacken wir in den nächsten Monaten testen wollen und packen alles schön ordentlich in den Wagen. Ungefähr eine Stunde später stehen wir vor der Holzplattform mit Ausblick ins Oberinntal. Herrlich. Das Wetter auch, aber besser wir fangen gleich an, bevor es stürmig wird.
Nachdem das Alpine Proof Banner hängt, die Puppen fixiert sind und die Spinning-Fahrräder bereitstehen, ist die Arbeit für heute geschafft. Aber das war nur der Start. Die ersten Wetterdaten und Messwerte aus dem Inneren der Jacken werden schon aufgezeichnet. Bald wissen wir mehr über die Outdoortauglichkeit unserer Prototypen.

Location, check – concrete foundation, check – wooden platform, check. Three times thanks to Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis for building world’s probably most beautiful and surely highest research station for textile research and testing jackets on Schönjoch, Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis. But now we should get started.
First we build new, fancy bases for the testing dummies from the former lab on Glungezer. Second we select which outdoor jackets should be tested in the next few months. Then we pack everything in our car. About an hour later we reach the wooden platform enjoying the stunning view on the Upper Inn Valley. Beautiful. Also the weather, but we better start working, before a storm arises or something.
After the Alpine Proof banner is fixed, dummies are positioned and spinning cycles are ready, today’s work is done. But this just was the beginning. We’re collecting first weather data and measurements from the inside of the jackets already. Soon we have a greater insight in the outdoor functionality of our prototypes.
