Out now the new Cairo Camo Hybrid Jacket by polychromelab and Heimplanet in Heimplanet’s online shop. Design and Fashion Blog Hypebeast also goes for this hybrid jacket’s functionality.

Product development of Cairo Camo hybrid jacket

It all starts – like always – with an idea. Heimplanet decides to manufacture special camouflage tents. For this purpose Cairo Camo pattern is developed. This geometric Arabic pattern creates with special colouring a three-dimensional, tectonic effect that we call „camouflage“.

Additionally, to go in line with the new Heimplanet tents, a true hybrid jacket is designed. The goal is to combine design and functinal aspects without reduction. This is why Heimplanet meets polychromelab. We know each other since ISPO 2012 and worked together in winter 2013/14 to test Heimplanet’s tents under extreme conditions at polychromelab’s Alpine Proof outdoor laboratory at mount Glungezer scientifically.

Polychromelab designs a concept and develops the technic for pigmentation of polychromelab hybrid textiles. This isn’t a very easy process, because we needed to prove long lasting of colour pigments in 2000 simulation hours at Alpine Proof outdoor laboratory.

Cairo Camo Chameleon Jacket

2000 hours. Let’s say one wears his jacket about two hours a day. So if we divide 2000 by two, we have 1000 wearing days. 1000 days are almost three years. So a Cairo Camo jacket can by worn for three years, everyday, under the most extreme conditions, without colour bleaching.

How does this work? We have something up our sleeve: there is a posibility to proof colour pigmentation on a fabric that don’t become lighter with the time but darker. So Cairo Camo hybrid jacket doesn’t bleach out and as a functional jacket stays an unique design apparel. And the best thing is: the whole process works without toxics!

Outdoor Funktional Jackets Test – Alpine Proof

Alpine Proof initiates a Functional Jackets Test for Outdoor Extreme

One might could think of some things concerning textile research, but what specifically this work looks like isn’t always well known. Therefore we present a functional jackets test like we run it in our alpine range outdoor laboratory.

Step 1: The Perfect Spot

Weather in polychromelab Alpine Proof textile lab is always freezing, stormy and extreme in winter. Seeing that one unwillingly wants to go outside a mountain lodge, where you can enjoy a majestic view on peaks all around this spot drinking a cup of hot tea. But such days are perfect for testing functional jackets, because over night it will ge cold and windy.

Step 2: What will be tested?

Quivering we run a coldness test. Therefore we perpare two functional jackets made of similar fabrics on dummies. This way we want to detect which fabric performs better at extreme cold. This kind of test are important to improove suitability for coldness in product development processes.

Step 3: Waiting

Soon it’s dark night. Temperatures are low. Sensors we placed inside the functional jackets begin to collect temperature and draught data. But the low point of temperature isn’t reached yet.

Step 4: It’s always wise to bring a sleeping bag

It’s night now. Spotlights make it possible to examine both functional jackets at night. By now temperatures are weigh under 0°C. We’re thrilled to find out which one of these functional fabric responds better to this freezing coldness. Only by running these kind of outdoor tests we can learn what jackets are capable of worn outdoors.

Step 5: Early Bird catches the Worm

Dawn. Night is over and the functional jackets are covered with a thin layer of ice. We start immediately working and sort out measurement data on our laptops. By comparing graphs we can tell which fabric is better and on which places the functional jackets are warmer. This conclusions are worth a mint for product development. This is the only way to improove weak spots of jackets.

Night Skiing vs. Product Test

Product Test at Night Skiing in Tyrol

Equiped with headtorches and a go pro we started at 2610 meters from our textiles research lab next to the Glungezer Hütte in Tyrol. In winter there are always some repairs to do. Additionally measured data by sensors, which we fixed to jackets for product testing, gives us insight concerning their functionality and resilience against exposure to nature.

Unfortunately work took longer as expected this time, so we had to go for night skiing on our way home. Beeing experienced with such incidents we had headtorches with us. Knowing the downhill route quite well after years of fieldtesting and product development at Mount Glungezer night skiing off the slopes wasn’t that dangerous.

At the Ready for Serial Production

Out and about in nature and Tyrol’s mountain range equipment easily is stretched to its limit. The wearout of gear is high, beeing outdoor about 300 days a year. When one is freezing, sweating, or feeling unpleasantly wind, or having to bear nature in any other way, one gets a lot of ideas of what else to wear to feel more comfortable concerning clothes.

At the ready, as you can see on the pictures, are new whole-body-clothing concepts, which we want to realise using polychromelab’s 3 layer laminate. By now there are only ideas and first prototypes to be tested at night skiing, but soon there will be more to tell.

High-Tech Jackets tested in extreme Outdoor Tests

Do high-tech Jackets keep their Promises?

Nowadays high-tech jackets have to stand up against nearly everything: they should be waterproof, windproof, stretchy, sturdy, hard-wearing, warming. light and looking good. Additionally one has to add to each one of these functions an attribute like „extremely, 100%, highly, maximum, optimal“ to tag a high-tech jacket.  Producers make many promises, but most outdoor jackets have to work for the first time, when the customer allready has bought the jacket and is wearing it in the mountains. If a jacket shouldn’t be a 100% waterproof then, one’s smitten.

Therefore the inventor of polychromelab reversible jackets, Michele Stinco, had the idea to test jackets under extreme alpine conditions, before it is available on the market.

 

High-tech Jackets tested in Tyrol

This is, how an original polychromelab-jacket-extreme-test looks like in practise:

Firstly, fabrics get spaned on wooden boards. Installing sensors we detect whether the fabric is suitable for outdoor use or not.

If the fabric is ready for manufacture, we design a reversible jacket. This prototype then is worn by dummies in our alpine laboratory at the Glungezer in Tyrol. Again we install sensors. Additionally we prepare a webcam to watch the jackets day and night for some months. Here you’ll find out what kind of weather high-tech jackets have to stand in our textiles research laboratory.

Then we evaluate the collected data. This way we’re able to detect waterproofness, windproofness and breathability by the means of temperature curves, humidity measurements and so on. By visual examination we can see, if outdoor jackets have been damaged by wind and weather or at seams and skirts.

If the prototype passes this test, we send it to the textile laboratory at the University of Innsbruck, where elasticity, scrub resistance and colour intensity get scientifically proven.

But there is one last test in our polychromelab 2610 alpine lab for the prototypes: the high-tech jackets get proven at applied extreme sports tests, like trailrunning, skiing, climbing and so on. Only this way one can proof what outdoor jackets have to be suitable for.

 

Alpine Proof – the Future of Outdoor Gear

Prospectively the project Alpine Proof will create an alpine seal of approval for outdoor gear to award high-tech jackets, which passed tests consiting of a combination of applied and scientific examination.

A true high-tech jacket doesn’t leave somebody out in the rain alone, but protects against wind and weather like a friend. High-tech jackets by polychromelab are available in our online shop.

Sports and Textiles, Research and Innovation: Tyrol innovative

Michael Hasler and Werner Nachbauer take the textiles research in Tyrol to the next level. The regions Tyrol and Vorarlberg support research projects, which investigate the synergy of textiles and man to produce gear of the future. In near future all programms will be coordinated under the name Alpine Proof.

Interesting research projects are cooperating in Tyrol and Vorarlberg. The concept from polychromelab contains to realise an alpine seal of approval to award scientifically and applied proven sports gear. Alpine Proof stands for quality, sustainability, progress and innovation and especially for products optimated for application.

Small companies sustain innovation

The austrian newspaper Wirtschaftsblatt Österreich writes about the story of founding of the Tyrolean startup polychromelab. To go into business yourself and found a company means a huge risk to everybody, who decides to do so. Especially the first five years are the hardest. One has to learn a lot about it and to be flexible. And above all in Austria one has to bring along innovation. Innovation makes products unique and only innovative, unique products stand a chance to come out on top.

Polychromelab talks about their idea Alpine Proof

It all started, as normal, at a mountain hike. Again gear couldn’t conform to the weather conditions in the mountains. If there only would be a warranty for Outdoor-products, that they really keep their promises outside in nature! Who hasn’t thought of it?

Michele Stinco and Elisabeth Frey from polychromelab started to test polychromelab fabrics under real weather conditions – and not only in sterile laboratories. The testing results of the prototype-jackets meant a qualified insight for product development to polychromelab. The company takes an advantage of their situation in the heart of the tyrolean Alps.

Alpine Proof as an alpine seal of approval

Step by step the idea of Alpine Proof takes shape in the thinkings of Michele and Elisabeth. In their own alpine textile-laboratory at the Glungezer in Tyrol even products from foreign apparel producers were tested on trial. Now the project Alpine Proof reaches the next stage: In near future an alpine seal of approval should come to life with fincial supports and broad cooperation between a lot of partners to allow international and local apparel producers to test their Outdoor gear in Tyrol to get the alpine seal of approval, named Alpine Proof.
